Adult/High School-Cookie entrepreneur Hannah Swensen is recruited to judge a bake-off but gets embroiled in a bittersweet murder. The victims are not Lake Eden's finest; one is a wife abuser and the other is a snippety blackmailer, but the town is small, concern is rampant, and Hannah is curious. She and her sister Andrea begin sleuthing to prevent their friend (the wife of the first victim) from being accused of a crime she did not commit. The story is at times dense with detail, but the relationships among family and neighbors are pleasingly homespun-and occasionally sophomoric. Spanning the time of the bake-off, this whodunit is appropriately interspersed with mouthwatering dessert recipes. Readers who don't like guts or gore will enjoy this mystery and stick with the amateur detectives as they reach an action-packed conclusion.

Another Sweet Hannah Swenson Mystery

Following up on the success of The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, this is the second volume in the Hannah Swenson Murder Mysteries. Here again, we find Hannah coping with the brutal Minnesota winter when the unthinkable happens. Hannah finds a body! The local high school coach and secret wife beater is found dead face down in Hannah's strawberry shortcake. His wife certainly has a motive, but is she the real killer? The police are inclined to think so, but Hannah certainly does not. With the aide of her sister, Andrea, she sets out to find the real killer. Many suspenseful twists and turns follow as Hannah and Andrea proceed on their relentless mission to free an innocent woman. Will they succeed and find the real killer? Only in the last few chapters will you find out the answer to this riddle.

Once again, author Joanne Fluke has surpassed herself with another excellent novel. The cozy and inviting atmosphere found in the first novel continues here against the backdrop of the cruel Minnesota cold. Many delicious recipes are included so you can share the experience right along with Hannah and her friends. Her strained relationship with her mother continues as her friendship with Norman grows and her closeness to her sister Andrea deepens. The novel keeps you in suspense right up until the very end providing an exhilarating mystery ride. This is a novel not to be missed. Very highly recommended.

A Cute Series

Another light read from a very cute little series.
However, the author really needs to work on character development a bit so that Hannah isn't quite so unlikeable. The way she kept sticking her nose into the investigation and determining what was and wasn't important for the police to know just left me wondering why she hadn't been arrested for withholding evidence, witness tampering, and several other charges.
I also wish the author would get out of the annoying habit of having the characters use each others' names in every sentence they say to each other (Hi Hannah. Hi Lisa. How are you Hannah? I'm fine Lisa, how are you? Fine Hannah. That's good Lisa.) This drove me nuts during the first book, and it didn't get any better this go-round. The story isn't hard to follow at all, so this really isn't necessary, and makes for a very distracting read.

Good book in a fun series

Veteran author Joanne Fluke has produced another winner in the Hannah Swensen series. This time the cookie baking sleuth finds her friend Danielle standing over the dead body of her abusive husband, a local high school coach. Never doubting Danielle's innocence, Hannah, with the surprisingly able assistance of her ever so feminine sister, Andrea, tackles a private investigation of the murder. The twists and surprises don't stop and neither do the mouth-watering references to dinners and desserts.Part of the charm of this series is that Hannah is surrounded by nice people and loving, supportive family members. She also has two competing admirers, one, a fix-up by her mother and his, the other a police officer who works for her brother-in-law. Hannah thoughtfully debates the virtues of each since one is movie star handsome and the other is bright and kind. There is no question we'll see Hannah exploring her options next time around. The series is set in Minnesota where the weather is cold but the people are not, but don't start with this book. Please read "The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder" first so you can meet Hannah, her friends, her family and her suspects and not miss a single detail. You won't be sorry, and you'll wait anxiously for next year's book.

Good collection

This might be a good way to deal with a little kid's "dinosaur phase." It's a short collection of Ray Bradbury stories and poems, and this edition is illustrated with six different artists' work and Bradbury's foreword from the eighties.
"Besides a Dinosaur, Whatta Ya Wanna Be When You Grow Up?" features a young boy who wants to be a dinosaur when he grows up -- with bizarre results. "A Sound of Thunder" follows a time-travel safari that goes horribly wrong. The eerie "Fog Horn" calls a strange, ancient creature. "Tyrannosaurus Rex" is involved in filmmaking, and the two poems "Lo, the Dear Daft Dinosaurs!" and "What If I Said, The Dinosaur's Not Dead" add a note of whimsy to it.
As with all Bradbury story collections, this is a pretty unusual bunch of stories -- there's humor, there's horror (the second story in particular) and dwelling on children in the Midwest with that odd knack he seems to have. The writing is spare and hard-hitting, and the publisher, ibooks, adds to the entertainment with illustrations. The cover art is the best, very bright and colorful. Inside the text of the stories is often lined with smaller pictures and patterns; the illustrations can be weird and funny, or realistic and almost frightening. The only letdown was Moebius's rather childlike illustrations.
If you have a kid who's obsessed by dinosaurs, or ever were one yourself (fess up! Everyone does it!) then this will be a good collection of dinosaur stories to share. And even if you already have this book in another edition, you may want to get it just for the illustrations.

The butterfly effect

After watching the movie "The Butterfly Effect", a friend of mine told me that Ray Bradbury had done something similar and much better in a short tale called "A Sound of Thunder". Since I like Bradbury's work a lot this friend lent this Bradbury anthology.
Bradbury's science fiction is not for everyone. Some readers may find his work too philosophical and sometimes hard. And these qualities are what I like best in his writings. The anthology "Dinosaur Tales" is a good example of some themes that he tackles with in his short stories and novels. And, in this book specifically there is a big plus, the illustrations made by some of the best illustrators in the world.
My favorite tale in the book --and probably the best and most famous-- is "A Sound of Thunder". This tells the story of a safari to the future of a group of people who will hunt dinosaurs, book something wrong happens. It is short, more or less 30 pages, but it is so profound and well written, and that is very moving and even scary if we come to think that it can be true some day. Moreover, it rises so many questions that it is a wonderful tale to read in a group and discuss afterwards. By the way, the line I used in the title refers to this story.
The other tales are quite good too, and also there are two poems that are great. But, like I aforementioned, one of the big plus of this edition are the illustrations made by Moebius, Jim Steranko, William Stout, Kenneth Smith, David Wiesner, Overton Lloyd and Gaham Wilson. All of them have many credits as illustrators and their drawings are unique, and give Bradbury's tales the real dimension of their narratives. In the poem "Lo, the Dear Daft Dinosaurs!" Lloyd's illustration are kind of dream-like abstract, showing a beautiful ballet.
This anthology is a great way of discovering Bradbury's narratives. And since dinosaurs are such a fascinating theme for youngsters, this book comes highly recommended to young readers.

Breaking through the waves

I received a copy of this book to write a review.

I enjoyed the finish of Sydney and Coen's story. Their true love for each other shines through keeping true to their age. I would recommend reading both stories and look forward to Henry's story.

This book is full of sex scenes. a bit to many, at least one per chapter. It's also full of a lot of self doubt "I don't deserve you" on both parts. My opinion would be if you would condense both of these you could add it to the first book and have a complete story. To much page filler for my taste, needs more story.

Sexy, Gripping and Intense!

This hot and sexy New Adult romance, set in the beautiful island of Hawaii is way more than it first seems. It not only examines love and lust and the importance of trust and friendship, but also delves into the darker issues of loss, guilt, jealousy, violence and abuse.

The chemistry between Sydney and Coen just sizzles off the page. Early on we see how Sydney is attracted to Coen, who has the reputation of being a player. When they are unexpectedly brought together in the role of tutor and pupil their mutual attraction ignites and they are drawn together in some scorching and passionate scenes. Coen wants to make their relationship official, but the situation is complicated due to Sydney finally realising that her best friend Henry is deeply in love with her and she fears that knowing she is with another will destroy him. Added to this complication is Coen's ex-girlfriend, who is convinced that Coen is hers and wants him back. The first book also hints at issues from Sydney's past which haunt her and resurface in the second instalment. Can she accept Coen as her one and only before it is too late and can she trust him with her secrets? The road to Sydney and Coen's HEA is certainly fraught with difficulties.

Sydney is a role model for all young women. She is a star pupil, good at her job and loves the island, the sea and its wildlife. She also values the ties of friendship and is especially concerned about how Henry will react when he finds out about her relationship with Coen. Although she appears strong she has a hidden vulnerability due to events in the past, which we come to comprehend more fully as the series progresses.

Coen is simply drop dead gorgeous! He is an alpha male with a big heart and falls deeply for Sydney, attracted to her beauty inside and out. I really felt his frustration with how Sydney dealt with Henry's feelings for her and the fact that she concealed their relationship, although I came to understand her own personal reasons for it as the plot unfolded. The love making scenes between Sydney and Coen were super hot, sensual and descriptive (very little being left to the imagination) and make this series definitely for readers over 18. At times the sex fest was such that I had to pause and take a break and catch a breath to calm my racing heart!

The way the author described the characters and their behaviour was realistic overall. The pacing was good as was the story arc and romance. I also liked the element of suspense - what was Sydney afraid of from her past and would it come back to haunt her and would she finally get together with Coen? The secondary characters were also well defined and I enjoyed the descriptions of the island and its wildlife, especially the scenes on the beach and in the sea. The series is a great read any time of the year to bring some sunshine and romance into your life and I recommend it to adult readers, particularly those who love New Adult reads. Copies of these books were given to me by the author for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

3.5 stars to a sweet, sexy and charming novel set in lovely Oahu, Hawaii.

Coen shows all the signs of a sexy bad boy with a smart mouth. Sydney is straight laced, smart and strong. With a family life she’s trying to put in her past and a recent breakup with a cheating ex-boyfriend her mind is screaming to stay away from everything bad A.K.A. Coen no matter how attractive he is. But life has other plans in mind for her, because now she’s not just his tutor she’s also his personal defense student.

Forced to be in contact with each other, neither ignore their mutual attraction at the same time learning that what’s under the surface is more appealing than their good looks. But even after fate brought them together, life is not that easy. There are external factors threaten their instant bond.

This a very light, easy read. Don’t misunderstand, it’s a full length novel told from both POVs, but it has a fast pace, an appealing storyline and dialogue that makes the pages fly by almost effortlessly. The descriptions of their beautiful surroundings gave fuel to my imagination while placing the story in the most romantic, fun and exotic places.

The hero and heroine have very likeable personalities. Coen has a tough exterior but is also very sensitive, attentive with a very clear vision of what he wants for himself. He’s book boyfriend material all around. Sydney, besides being strong and smart, is selfless and caring, but she takes that a bit to the extreme, which gave the book a high school drama feeling at times. Her reactions were a tad immature, especially when it came to her relationship with best friend Henry.

And although the book has all the ingredients of a great read, I feel like we didn’t get enough depth into plot and characters, leaving me with too many unanswered questions. I still enjoyed it very much, and it gave me a great sweet fix and I hope that E.L. continues writing a gives us more of her loving characters (shout out for Henry anyone?)

Probably cheaper than printing out the website...

What I was hoping for in this book was a little better laid out and explained version of the tutorial from Arch's website. What I received is a verbatim printed version of the website in a pocket sized soft cover book. I wanted a printed version that I could follow along with, and had considered just printing the website in the first place. At least for $11 the book might have cost less than it would have to print out all those pages on my own. Ink is expensive! My biggest complain is that it really is word for word from the website. For example, the VERY FIRST PAGE has an underlined hyper-link to go for more info. Go ahead, try and click it... I dare you.

Read the WIKI it's basically ripped right from there, you could save yourself some money by printing the WIKI out, I knew what it was when I purchased the book I was just curious if anything useful was added but no straight rip off of the web pages .
