From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Does saving some lives justify sacrificing others? This is the main question asked in this second installment of this series. Picking up right where the first volume left off, Mare and Cal are on the run from the usurper King Maven and his army of Silver bloods. Armed with a list of other "newbloods" like herself, Mare takes on the mission of recruiting them for the Scarlet Guard before they can be found by Maven. However, as her journey progresses, Mare learns that the lines between right and wrong aren't so clear, and she begins to become exactly the kind of person the Scarlet Guard is fighting against. While the kill count seems to be excessively high, it does end up raising some interesting points: namely, the question of who, if anyone, really deserves to die. And do the ends truly justify the means? As with her first effort, Aveyard certainly has a flair for the dramatic, which teens will eat up. The action hits the ground running and doesn't stop until after the last page is turned. And while some might recognize several familiar plot-related beats that resemble the novel's dystopian contemporaries, they shouldn't lessen the story's appeal. VERDICT Fans of Red Queen (HarperCollins, 2015) who have been clamoring for the sequel will be sated.—Kimberly Castle-Alberts, Hudson Library & Historical Society, OH

From the Back Cover

If there s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it s that she s different.

Mare Barrow s blood is red the color of common folk but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince the friend who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: She is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they ve always known and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul."

Wow. I am so glad that's over.
By Kait
*SPOILERS*

Okay. So:

Red Queen was good ! I really liked the whole idea of the divide between silver and red bloods and finished the book rather quickly, to be brief.

Now, I was so excited for Glass Sword. Like, I got it the day it was released. So I really gave it a chance, I did. But boy, by page 40, I could not stand this book. Not just the book, but MARE.

Let me break this down into what made this book a disappointing disaster for me.

1) MARE

I'm going to call her nightMare because that's exactly what she was throughout the entire book. What on Earth! I've never disliked a main character so much.

It started out by her calling herself the 'lighting girl' literally 20 times within the first two chapters. Yes, okay, we get it. You're the Lightning girl, woopdy doo. Not only was that incredibly annoying, but her ENTIRE inner dialogue was a pity party that NO ONE wanted to be invited to. On every single page she had to remind everyone of how "broken" and "alone" she was and boo hoo. 'Oh look at me I'm the Lightning girl and my heart is ice and my soul is black and I'm so alone I can't smile or laugh because that girl is dead and I must become this and that and I must harden my already hard heart and push people away and I can't trust anyone because ANYONE CAN BETRAY ANYONE' (yes, we KNOW) and blah blah blah BLAH.
Literally all she did was whine!! I'm going to add some direct quotes from the book at the end but I'm just paraphrasing what her inner thoughts were like. We had to be told what nightMare was feeling after every single little thing instead of being SHOWN. Show, not tell. Hello?? NightMare was also incredibly disrespectful, heartless, and distant.
She didn't give two craps about her family and belittled Kilorn FOR NO REASON. Okay, so with her family, she left them at that camp place. The Tuck? I don't even remember and I literally just finished the book an hour ago. Anyways, then she gives NO THOUGHT to them AT ALL after that. In Red Queen she visibly cared about them! Even sneaking off with Cal to get to see them and now it's like she did a 180 360 2 million turn around and couldn't care less. ??!!!

I cannot understand her reasoning for using Kilorn as a punching bag and literally treating him like dirt. No, garbage. She called him useless to his face and belittled him constantly. When Kiliorn told her how he felt about her romantically (that scene kind of came out of nowhere and was messy in general btw) she didn't care at all! Instead of being KIND to him about it, she was basically like, "Oh no, never wanted this to happen. Too bad for you Kilorn. I'm going to draw on my inner Mareena now because I don't know how to deal with this on my own." Ugh. NightMare did not deserve a friend like Kilorn who constantly forgave her for her disgusting attitude towards him. She honestly treated him so badly it was horrid to read. If that's how she treats her friends, it's no wonder that she has none.

Another thing: nightMare acted as if she were the center of the world/universe/Galaxy. News flash: YOU ARE NOT. In addition to calling herself the lighting girl (UGH) every 2 sentences, she also reminds the readers that she's the most important, her ability the best and deadliest. Which, by the way, was not true. She was no better than Cal's Fire or any of the other newbloods. In any way, shape, or form. NightMare needed to humble herself and sit down. She acted as if everyone else paled in comparison to her. And since Victoria Aveyard didn't bother to give any of the other characters the time of day (getting to that soon), they really did pale in comparison to that whiny little girl.

NightMare also complained about being alone. How completely isolated she was and blah blah blah. But she made herself that way! She didn't want to get close to anyone and was rude to them all, acting like a cold high and mighty leader. She kept saying that everyone was afraid of her, or, of the "lightning girl" (UGHHH) but why?? She never did anything to them to warrant their fear and so the whole thing was unrealistic. It was just an excuse for Victoria to not have to write any civil interactions between nightMare and any other character. I don't really mind, all of nightMare's interactions were painful anyways.

I can't really say enough about how annoying nightMare was. She was the worst. Her inner dialogue didn't make me feel bad for her in the slightest. Because of her terrible character (such a contrast to who she was in Red Queen by the way!) I didn't care what happened to her. I've never cared less for a main character. Maven inwardly tortured nightMare? Oh well.
NightMare is sad and lonely? Oh well.
NightMare fell off a cliff? Oh well.
Don't. Care. She was the main thing that ruined this book for me.

2) The characters

Characters are supposed to come alive. Authors are supposed to breathe life into them, to make them leap off the page and into our hearts. Did Ms. (Mrs?) Aveyard do that? NOPE.
I knew something was missing, even from Red Queen and now I know it was the characters. It wasn't as noticeable in RQ but oh, was it noticeable here. They had no quirks. What kind of food do they like/dislike? What makes them tick? They had no goals that didn't revolve around nightMare and her little quest. All Aveyard did was give the characters one word personality characteristics:

Farley- bold. (Speaking of Farley, wow did she turn translucent in this book. I can't believe Aveyard took such a strong, fierce leader and turned her into essentially, a nobody. :/ NightMare over shadowed her with her awful attention-seeking self. Yuck.)
Kilorn-kind.
Cal- humble.
Cameron- fierce.
Shade- funny.
LIKE?
Honestly because of their lack of everything, I sadly didn't really care about anyone. When Shade died it was upsetting but nightMare didn't care so neither did I. The family didn't seem to care so neither did I. The author skipped over every character just to get to nightMare who was the worst of them all. It was awful how little attention all the other characters got. And the newbloods ? LOL. Who are they? I don't know. What are their goals besides being used my nightMare? I don't know. All we know are their abilities, and I forgot their names as soon as they were mentioned. It was sad. It IS sad.

3) The Villain- Maven.

When you have a villain in a book, you want the readers to hate them. You want them to gasp and curl their fist, shout "how dare you!" In my
opinion at least. Maven was the softest villain I've ever read. We were all TOLD about him and what he was doing, like once in a while the author remembered to mention him. Maven was completely behind the scenes which stinks because he's the reason nightMare is so broken and cold and alone and BOO HOO. The little notes he wrote were silly and childish. Even at the end when he captured nightMare (which I was not upset about by the way. Like I said, I don't care what happens to nightMare. I didn't care that she was humiliated in front of all the Silvers. Oh well, too bad for her. I'm glad Aveyard didn't do two pages of inner dialogue on what nightMare was feeling at the time and how alone and sad she was. Thanks!) I still didn't hate him. It was kind of like, "Oh, there you are Maven. Cool. Sorry about your mom by the way." (Side note, Queen Elara's death was not even written out. Are you kidding me? She gets whisked into the dust and fog and comes out electrocuted and burned and fried up. Aveyard writes painfully specific details about surroundings and places but not important scenes like the death of villain #2.) -__- Anyways, the villain wasn't a villain and that also weakened the book a whole lot.

4) Repetitiveness/Boring

We were literally told nightMare was the Lightning girl 4000000000 times, and told how sad and alone she was. This annoyed me to no end. Seriously, no end. Aveyard spent so much time focusing on nightMare's inner pity party that all the action scenes fell flat because after every little thing, we had to know how nightMare felt about it. Who. Cares. There was too much detail to the point where I skipped over half the descriptions. Yawn.

5) The romance

I understand why nightMare wants to keep Cal at a distance, after all that betrayal by Maven and whatever. But then she of course kisses him and sleeps in the same bed with him and so on, and then pushes him away for no reason like a spoiled brat. Just like Kilorn, nightMare treated Cal like crap. She even belittled him as well, literally saying "...he's not the sharpest sword in the armory." EXCUSE YOU. Who are you to talk?? No one.The fact that Cal overlooked her vile behavior and crawled back was also unrealistic. NightMare was so awful ( I can't stress that enough you guys) that it truly was unrealistic that anyone could tolerate her and would continue to socialize with her. Kiliorn and Cal did not deserve the treatment they received from nightMare, and she didn't deserve them, period. The romance was choppy mostly because nightMare treated Cal like a toy and only wanted him when it benefited her. Ugh. And I LIKE Cal. He is one of the only characters I like. NightMare doesn't deserve him at all. Mareena did, but nightMare does not.

Now, those are the main 5 things that just made me want to throw my kindle while reading this book. Of course nightMare tops it all, she was 95% of why this was so frustrating to read. Seriously she was the worst. Anyways, here are some examples and my reactions to them.

*NightMare repeatedly referring to herself as the "Lightning girl". Also thinking she is the best thing since sliced bread.

Example 1) "I am the little lightning girl---living electricity, a lighting bolt in human form....I am valuable, I am powerful..."

Me: Okay, yeah sure.

Example 2) "Kilorn is looking to someone else now... he's asking the lightning girl."

Me: Uh huh. Yup."

Example 3) "....like every wire and circuit since I became the lightning girl..."

Me: Oookay.

Example 4) ""The lighting girl" echoes from them..."

Me: Lol okay I get it.

Example 5) "Afraid of the lightning girl..."

Me: That's enough.

Example 6) "...but I am the lightning girl...."

Me: OKAY---

Example 7) "....I was the lightning girl..."

Me: I GET IT OKAY.

Those are 7 of MANY you guys. MANY. But I won't torture you anymore.

Now, some examples of nightMare's inner never-ending pity party.

Example 1) "...and yet, I've never wanted to cry more. For them, I hold back. I curl inward and bleed inside, alone, so no one can see..."

Me: Sorry? Why are you THIS upset again? Did you kill your own father under the power of your mother? No? Okay then lol.

Example 2) "...sets in, joining the cold still deep in my bones. Normally I would shiver---but I am getting used to his feeling. I suppose I should get used to being alone too..."

Me: And why? Oh yeah, because you push everyone away please be quiet now.

(you know what you guys, she had so many pity-party poor me boo hoo incredibly annoying moments that I just can't. Let's just say I was in a fetal position halfway through.)

This review has gone on along enough, and though I have so much more to say about the utter annoyance, frustration, and disappointment this book caused, I think I've made my point. I won't be reading book 3 or 4 because I doubt there can be a comeback after this. It's just a shame to see a series with good potential go to the pits. :/

P.S: But Cameron/ Thank goodness for Cameron. Thank you for telling nightMare OFF. Too bad your character faded away shortly afterwards.

By J. Arkin
I have to say it and I hate that I have to say it because this was one of my most anticipated titles of the year… but this book I think suffered greatly from second book syndrome.

If you’re reading this, you have to know that I absolutely loved Red Queen… it was exciting and suspenseful and full of fantastical elements that drew me in and had me so stupid excited to get my hands on book 2. I loved Mare… I loved Cal… I loved Kilorn and at times I even loved Maven.
We dive right into action with Mare and Cal trying to escape Maven with the help of the Scarlet Guard which was exciting and brought me right back into the heart of the story, but from there it was just a lot of ups and downs for me.

The pacing of this part of the story was incredibly slow, and I get that there was no way around it… we needed to find out about the other Reds with special skills, but it was just soooooo stinking sloooooow.

Unfortunately, I found myself skimming over passages of the middle of this book and then having to focus, go back and pay better attention.
I think my other issues were with Mare… she at times to me seemed to have lost the fire and spirit that I came to love in Red Queen. She was just kind of moving through the motions with no real passion for what she was doing and it was so frustrating! I expected more from her as a character and all the things I needed just were not there.

I have to mention the romance because there were a lot of different players in Red Queen, and while they are all still present there is no question as to she’s got the connection with but to be honest, it was soooooo bland and not at all exciting and I didn’t get any urges to get them to hook up. I unfortunately think that had a lot to do with my feelings about Mare.

I still love Cal. The Fire Prince absolutely needed more page time, though I am loving the arc of his character.

I am trying to do this spoiler free, so I won’t give you any specifics HOWEVER, I need to say this. There is one goal that these characters have through most of this book and when the god damn thing happens, it was so ANTI-CLIMACTIC I probably would have missed it.

And then Aveyard does it to you with that ending.

As I’m thinking about this story, I’m surprised to learn this is going to be 4 books. Will I be reading them? You bet I will, but I will definitely be hoping that the story pace picks up, I start to dislike Mare less, and we can get some damn kissing that means something. As it stands, you just may find me cheering for Maven!

Other reviews express my feelings about this book pretty well. Basically the author took characters I actually liked, and made them into something that I very much disliked until the last 20 pages. In fact, I started skimming after page 200, I couldn't stand the wallowing. Aveyard writing style is one that I do enjoy, so no complaints there, just about what she did to the characters.

Cartographies of Diaspora: Contesting Identities (Gender, Race, Ethnicity), by Avtar Brah

By addressing questions of culture, identity and politics, Cartographies of Diaspora throws new light on discussions about `difference' and `diversity', informed by feminism and post-structuralism. It examines these themes by exploring the intersections of `race', gender, class, sexuality, ethnicity, generation and nationalism in different discourses, practices and political contexts.
The first three chapters map the emergence of `Asian' as a racialized category in post-war British popular and political discourse and state practices. It documents Asian cultural and political responses paying particular attention to the role of gender and generation. The remaining six chapters analyse the debate on `difference', `diversity' and `diaspora' across different sites, but mainly within feminism, anti-racism, and post-structuralism.

Review
..." suggests a powerful sociological imagination at work."
-"Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies

From the Back Cover
Culture, politics, subjectivity and identity are highly contested in contemporary debates. Cartographies of Diaspora throws light on these debates by exploring the intersections of 'race', gender, class, sexuality, ethnicity, generation and nationalism in different discourses, practices and political contexts. Cartographies of Diaspora provides an innovative theoretical framework for the study of 'difference', 'diversity' and 'commonality' which links them to the analyses of 'diaspora', 'border' and 'location'. In relating these questions to contemporary migrations of people, capital and cultures, it offers fresh insights into thinking about late twentieth-century social and cultural formations. It will be essential reading to students of sociology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, 'race' and ethnic studies, women's studies and anthropology, and will also appeal to teachers, youth and community workers and social workers.

Operation Thunderbolt: Flight 139 and the Raid on Entebbe Airport, the Most Audacious Hostage Rescue Mission in History, by Saul David

The definitive account of one of the greatest Special Forces missions ever, the Raid of Entebbe, by acclaimed military historian Saul David.
On June 27, 1976, an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris was hijacked by a group of Arab and German terrorists who demanded the release of 53 terrorists. The plane was forced to divert to Entebbe, in Uganda--ruled by the murderous despot Idi Amin, who had no interest in intervening.
Days later, Israeli commandos disguised as Ugandan soldiers assaulted the airport terminal, killed all the terrorists, and rescued all the hostages but three who were killed in the crossfire. The assault force suffered just one fatality: its commander, Yoni Netanyahu (brother of Israel's current Prime Minister.) Three of the country's greatest leaders: Ehud Barak, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin planned and pulled off one of the most astonishing military operations in history.

USA Today "New and Noteworthy"
Vanity Fair "Hot Type" pick
"Book of the Year": The Spectator Magazine, BBC History Magazine, The Mail on Sunday
"Best History Books of 2015": Amazon UK

"What will most likely be the definitive work on the subject.... This is the achievement of a masterly, first-rate historian."―Alan Furst, New York Times Book Review

"Saul David has nimbly woven a breathless romp across Europe, the Middle East and Africa...a suspenseful read. 3.5 stars out of 4."
―USA Today

This gripping tale has already been told in numerous books, feature films and documentaries...But David's version, which cuts back and forth between the key players and reads like a film script, should prove definitive."
―The Boston Globe

"Thrilling....Dozens of books and movies have tried to capture the menace and the romance of the operation....In Operation Thunderbolt, British historian Saul David relies on extensive interviews with the captors, kidnapped and rescuers to retell the story in a tick-tock trek from Tel Aviv bunkers to the airport in Entebbe. The effect is heart-racing."
―Jordan Handler Hirsch, Wall Street Journal

"He brings thrilling detail to one of the most dramatic rescue missions in recent history--and highlights the key roles played by Israeli leaders Ehud Barak, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin."―Jane Ciabattari, BBC.com

"[The story] has been told many times on page and screen. But never better than British historian Saul David does in this meticulously researched, vivid account. He has a knack for making the reader feel he is right there."
―Martin Rubin, Washington Times

"This book is an enthralling, minute-by-minute retelling of the hijack and the dramatic rescue using new sources and material."―Max Hastings, author of Inferno

"David, who has authored a number of books on wars in the 19th and 20th centuries, brings his excellent skill as a professor of war studies at the University of Buckingham to this story.... Operation Thunderbolt is written in an informed and colorful fast-paced way."
―Jerusalem Post

"Totally thrilling, totally poignant. Bringing the greatest special forces operation of modern times blazingly to life, David's book, full of new revelations, written with the excitement of an action movie, the authority of a historian, is great drama, superb storytelling--and yet tells us much about the Middle East today."―Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of Jerusalem

"David paces the narrative effectively, cutting back and forth among Entebbe, Tel Aviv, and Israeli military establishments with occasional looks at events in other world capitals. With high tension and as many plot twists as any fictional thriller, this book is hard to put down."―Kirkus

"An excellent account of the planning and execution of a successful high-risk operation."―Publishers Weekly

"David, author of numerous military histories such as Churchill's Sacrifice of the Highland Division, provides a minute-by-minute account of the entire event, focusing on the political maneuvering and the purely military operation, in excruciating detail...A definitive history of the Entebbe operation, likely to be popular among readers of military and terrorism works."―Library Journal

"Will introduce a new generation to an extraordinary story...Brilliantly told."―Jewish Chronicle

"A brilliant, breathless account that reads like the plot of an action movie, switching between events in parts of the world as the drama unfolds... David's book is a good reminder that our own War on Terror has deep roots."―The Sunday Telegraph

"It's a brilliantly orchestrated book, wonderfully rich in detail, but at the same time roaring along at a heart-thumping pace... I embarked on this book as someone not particularly interested in the Middle East, or in adventure tales of soldiers in action; I finished it in a state of high tension, buzzing through the pages in the need to know what happened next."―Mail On Sunday

"For the first time in my reading life I felt physically thrilled by a book... Wonderful."―Literary Review

"In 1976, Palestinian Arabs from a splinter group of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and German far leftists from the Revolutionare Zellen hijacked an Air France Airbus with nearly 250 passengers on a flight from Athens to Paris... At the time this remarkable ation enthralled people the world over and the military historian, Saul David, now tells the story once more in a well-researched and highly readable account."
―Times Literary Supplement

"Almost indecently exciting."
―Craig Brown, The Mail on Sunday

"In Operation Thunderbolt: Flight 139 and the Raid on Entebbe, acclaimed military historian Saul David provides readers with a definitive account of what he calls one of the greatest Special Forces mission ever. The Entebbe story presented on the pages of this book reads almost like a thriller. Tension builds minute by minute with a narrative told from many angles - the hostages, the soldiers, the politicians, and even the terrorists themselves."―Ellis Shuman, The Times of Israel

Brutality, fear, terror, barbarism from the first page to the last. Heroics too, of course.
By Charles A. Krohn
Do I have your attention? The headline is only half as shocking as the real story. I found myself in the same high-jacked Air France plane, in the same old airport at Entebbe as the hostages, virtually making me believe I was there as the horrible events unfolded. I read a great deal, but this is the first time I ever felt part of the action, wondering what would happen next, expecting to be killed because all the hostages were separated into two groups--Jews and others. When they were rescued, I was rescued.

I was at first reluctant to take this book home from the library, because I remember the basic outline. Yet, it was a total surprise, mostly because of the attention to detail, especially the machinations of the Israeli government that agreed to the terrorist demands at first, then realizing a military solution might be possible after all. The outcome was always uncertain and the risks very high. This book is a minute-by-minute account. It gripped me from the first page and didn't let go until I was exhausted emotionally and, in a way, physically.

It is the best book I've read in a long time. If the Bible is ever amended, this tale will be told again without embellishment

Don’t miss this compelling account that reads like a political thriller yet tells a true story
By Bookreporter
Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin are names many know today only for their leadership in the State of Israel. Each man served terms as Prime Minister, as well as in the Israeli military and various political positions. But in 1976, they faced a terrifying emergency: the hijacking of Air France Flight 139 by Arab and German terrorists, who demanded the release of imprisoned terrorists in exchange for the safe return of the plane’s passengers and crew.

Air travel in 1976 was dramatically different from what it is today. Security, while present, varied in effectiveness from country to country. In Greece it was notoriously slack, while in Israel it was the strictest in the entire world. During this era, hijackings were much more common, reaching a height of 82 in the single year of 1969. These hijackings were often focused on the takeovers of Israeli airplanes by pro-Palestinian terror groups, following Israel’s defeat of Jordan, Syria and Egypt in the Six-Day War. In response, Israel tightened its airport security and became the safest country in the world to fly from, with thorough examinations of every single passenger (and accompanying baggage) boarding flights departing Israel.

On June 27, 1976, over 200 passengers boarded Air France Flight 139 at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport. Many were alarmed to learn upon check-in that the plane would be making an unplanned stop in Athens, Greece; one child on the flight, Olivier Cojot, remarked to his father, “Hey Dad, if I were a terrorist I would get on at the stopover.” Ellinikon International Airport was known, apparently even to children, as the easiest place for a terrorist to board a plane, along with weapons. Several of the passengers attempted to change to El Al flights in response to this, yet were unable to secure seats elsewhere.

Flight 139 took off on a beautiful sunny morning and headed without incident to Athens, where 38 passengers left the plane and 56 boarded it. Unknown to the plane’s crew and Ellinikon’s security, among the travelers were four PLFP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) hijackers. (It must be noted that the metal detector for all actually entering the terminal from Athens was quite effective on that day, yet scrutiny of those transferring from one plane to another was barely monitored, as they were assumed to have been examined already.)

The four, along with their large bags of arms, were transferring from a Bahrain flight. Two Germans and two Arabs, members of the PLFP (which was known as a particularly dangerous segment of the Palestine Liberation Organization, as well as the originator of hijackings of Israeli planes), took control of Flight 139 only eight minutes after takeoff. They further secured control by separating the mothers and children from the men, placing them in first class while the rest were left in the economy section. And now, the plane changed course from a Paris route to Benghazi, Libya, a safe place for Palestinian terrorists. Eventually, Flight 139 would head to Entebbe, Uganda, where President Idi Amin actually colluded with the hijackers by providing food, an old airport terminal to house the passengers, and additional Ugandan soldiers for guard duty.

Back in Israel, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin held his regular mid-week meeting with his Cabinet members, when he was handed a note informing him of the Air France hijacking. Having recently experienced the disaster with Palestinian terrorists’ hostage-taking of the Ma’alot elementary school (in which Israeli soldiers attempted to take over the school, yet the terrorists killed dozens of schoolchildren), Rabin was hesitant to plan a military rescue. His feeling was that no Jew should die when a peaceful option was possible. Yet his Minister of Defense, Shimon Peres, believed that Israel must not give in to blackmail; if they met the terrorists’ demands, then any terrorist anywhere would believe that Israel would give in.

Nevertheless, the greatest Israeli rescue mission --- which would become known as Operation Thunderbolt --- would soon be planned. When the demands became known (the release of 53 imprisoned fellow terrorists), members of Israeli Special Forces (including Benjamin Netanyahu’s older brother, Yoni) developed a plan of attack. Would the hostages be rescued in time before the deadline set by the terrorists?

Saul David has crafted a meticulously researched account of Operation Thunderbolt. With interviews included from members of the Special Forces team, passengers and the terrorists themselves, readers will feel that they are on the sidelines watching one of the most momentous rescues in the history of the State of Israel. Don’t miss this compelling account that reads like a political thriller yet tells a true story.

Pamwe Chete
By Keith A. Comess
In military annals, few countries have achieved as many accomplishments in special warfare and intelligence-craft as has Israel. The Israelis have pulled off some stunning coups in the few decades of its existence and - of those - few have garnered more attention than the 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue. Saul David's "Operation Thunderbolt" is a compelling recounting of the event, adding considerable details of planning and execution to the existing record.

As is universally known, Israel has been locked in struggle with its numerous adversaries since the May, 1948 declaration of statehood. Of course, hostilities long preceded that event, but the nascent Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were able to preserve the state. The 1949 armistice lines de facto established its borders for many years. In 1964, disorganized and disparate irregular warfare groups were gathered under the aegis of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), this in an effort to improve military prospects against the highly accomplished IDF.

The PLO and various splinter factions eventually recognized that isolated armed action was only a component of a successful campaign: novelty and publicity were needed. To achieve that end, airline hijacking became a favored tactic in service of the larger goal of "defeating" Israel (however that may be defined). One sub-splinter group acting under the authority of Wadie Hadad acted in concert with a German extremist faction, the "Revolutionary Cells" and together, members of both groups hijacked an Air France jet and eventually landed it in Entebbe, Uganda. On the ground, they were warmly received by Idi Amin Dada, "Field Marshall" and state leader who actively collaborated in the affair from its inception.

Confronted with a determined terrorist group sheltered and abetted in a distant, hostile country, the Israelis reacted to the threatened murder of a significant subset of passengers (namely, the Jewish/Israeli component plus the air crew) by planning negotiations for a hostage exchange: there was no other reasonable option. Yet, almost alone, Defense Minister Shimon Peres thought otherwise. Peres, even though not a professional soldier, advocated strongly for military action. He did this against the concerted, hostile opposition of Prime Minister Rabin, a man with military background. The conflicts between these two men, played out over the very short timeline until the hijackers' ultimatum expired, comprises a significant portion of David's book.

Elements of the IDF, devised several plans. These were vetted and abandoned for various reasons, all carefully explained in "Thunderbolt". Only one option seemed reasonable: a flight of transport planes carrying a small number of commandos would attack the Old Terminal at Entebbe in a surprise raid. Fortunately, much intelligence on the Entebbe airport was available to the Israelis. Idi Amin was a former Israeli ally, one who proudly wore IAF paratrooper wings, despite not having earned them. Old architectural plans for the Israeli-built terminal were updated with current intelligence as conveyed by released hostages and limited air photography. Based on limited data and Peres' relentless advocacy, the Israeli cabinet approved the operation. As is well known, it was a success: two hostages died (at least one by "friendly fire") and one commando was killed (Yoni Netanyahu, brother of the current Israeli Prime Minister).

The book reads quickly, especially the operational sections. It is well supplemented with maps and attack plans. The logistical, intelligence, planning and deliberative details are all clearly and compellingly explained.

The major shortcoming of the book is the extensive "imagined dialogue". For example, Yoni Netanyahu's interior monologue added the too detailed recitation of trivial recollections and irrelevant stories from inconsequential captives detract from the main story. The concluding chapter contains interesting interview information from a surviving member of the Revolutionary Cells and provides contextual detail on the collaboration. A particularly interesting section on the disillusionment of many German extreme leftists (extracted from Paul Berman's book) with the entire "anti-Zionist" enterprise.

Of course, the struggle goes on. The anti-Israeli terrorism palette no longer includes airline hijackings and the terrorists are no longer secular Marxist-Leninists. Nowadays, they are Islamists and generally disregard whatever moral constraints their predecessors exercised with respect to civilian mass casualties. Nonetheless, and as David notes, the Entebbe raid set a paradigm most countries attempt to follow: special forces raids to free hostages, destroy terrorist targets and deter by that tactic. Whether or not that approach works as part of a larger strategy is debatable, and it's not part of this book. The reference standard remains the Israeli approach and, as might be said in the Shona dialect, "Pamwe Chete": all together, at least as pertains to Western special forces and terrorists and Israel commandos lead the way.

A disappointment.
By Bill Oterson
There must be more to dreams than we know. As a result I've recorded, investigated, read extensively and experimented. After all I also dream. My interest waned some until rekindled after Creative Dreaming by P. Garfield suggested "dream telepathy". That is so exciting. The title Mutual Dreaming entices and I hoped it might open a door but alas Ms. Magallon's book is but a compilation of dreams or stories that may or may not suggest mutuality and offers nothing that doesn't smack of fiction. What a disappointment.

A Goldmine of Valuable Information!
By David J. Brown
I found this book utterly fascinating; it's simply a goldmine of valuable information that is not easy to locate elsewhere. This is the only book that I could find on this subject--although Robert Waggoner's Lucid Dreaming, Jean Campell's Group Dreaming, and Stanley Krippner's Dream Telepathy, also provide some valuable information. But Linda Lane Magallon's book is the best, albeit the only real comprehensive overview of the subject, and it is well-researched. I think Magallon's book Mutual Dreaming is important, as it stands out as the only real systematic attempt to explore and study this most fascinating phenomena.

From the Inside Flap
Published in 1995, the bestselling first edition of Trading Chaos provided readers with the most practical and comprehensive guide for applying chaos theory to the real world of trading and investing. But today, the markets are different than they were even a few years ago. So with fresh research in hand, coauthors Bill Williams and Justine Gregory-Williams have updated their profitable methods and provide new techniques to help you take profits from the markets.

Trading Chaos, Second Edition will not only show you how to anticipate, recognize, and react to impending bull and bear market conditions, it will also introduce you to the latest findings in physics and psychology as applied to various markets–stock, bond, futures, indexes, and many others.

The first portion of this book is devoted to understanding how the rewards you’ll acquire in trading and investing are determined by what is happening inside of you. By digging through some very interesting and deep psychological principles, you can become a profitable "trade/vestor"–using technical techniques for good short-term entries and exits, but also holding on to long-term investments when the opportunity presents itself. Trading Chaos, Second Edition will help you build a solid psychological foundation before you enter the markets.

After you’ve learned how to gain an inner analytic edge, the authors will show you how the application of self-knowledge will improve your bottom line. Through numerous charts, checklists, and examples, you’ll be introduced to proven techniques that can make the unpredictable understandable and make your journey into the markets more profitable. You’ll learn how to:

  • Sharpen entries and exits, and reduce whiplashes with the powerful "Alligator" indicator
  • Get into a new trend very early with proper use of the "First Wise Man"
  • Add on aggressively after your first entry using the "Second Wise Man" with the help of the Awesome Oscillator (AO)
  • Make fractal breakout trades with the "Third Wise Man"–these almost guarantee profitable follow-through on a trade

In this early part of the twenty-first century, you have a choice to either be a part of the last generation of traders and investors using linear (ineffective) techniques or the first generation using effective nonlinear (chaotic) techniques. By reading the Second Edition of Trading Chaos, you’ll learn how you can take your trading skills to the next level and make steady profits in any market.

Praise for
TRADING CHAOS
SECOND EDITION

"As a trader and an author for over fourteen years in stocks, futures, and options, it still amazes me when I read a book that teaches me new approaches to the market. This book is one of these amazing books that can teach the novice or the professional something important to take them to the next level of their trading. It is a must read for everyone interested in looking at the markets in a new way."
–George Fontanills, President Emeritus, Optionetics

"Bill and Justine Williams, two of the truly great teachers of market action, have written an outstanding book. It not only covers the psychology of personal trading but provides one with a well defined, coherent trading plan. This book is must reading for any serious trader, whether a beginner or experienced veteran."
–John R. Hill, President, Futures Truth Company

"What Bill Williams does best is raise questions and doubts in the minds of his readers. But, even better, he then provides wonderful new choices for thinking and acting. He has a deft lightness in his writing and a seriousness of purpose that drew me in like a magnet."
–Rodney Napier, PhD, head of The Napier Group
coauthor, The Courage to Act and Groups: Theory & Experience (now in its seventh edition)

Trading Books
By kiwi_trader
As an experienced trader who has bought thousands of dollars of trading books from Amazon I found this one less than impressive.

This is not about Chaos. This is not about trading Chaos.

One of the other reviewers says "It's interesting to note that in this new book, the chaos-derived indicators (alligator, AO, and fractals) are not changed."

Given that these sexily renamed indicators are just moving averages and macds with tweaked parameters then its not really surprising. For a real book by a real trader try "Trading Day by Day" by Chick Goslin. For ideas about how to trade try "The Ultimate Trading Guide" by John Hill of Futures Truth. For psychology try one of Mark Douglas's books or Brett Steinbargers book.

Good luck in a tough industry :)

Readable, but far from compleat
By ServantofGod
This book is not about chaos theory, nor trading chaos, but a trading book with the first 95 pages about trading psychology, primarily Zen and Tao based, and the rest 133 pages of a trading system that comes with "Metastock". As a trading book fan and a Chinese who know Zen and Tao well, I do like the first part of it as food for thought, and definitely not as reading material to sharpen my trading edge. I doubt whether the very vague Zen or Tao approach taken by the author can be well understood and practised by western traders. Furthermore, I agree with a previous reviewer that the "trade with the trend/flow" concept preached by the author contradict a little bit with his own quasi-countertrend system presented in the second part. So, I suggest those who dont have access to Metastock nor Omega Tradestation facilities should give it a pass. It's definitely not a smart way of investing if one puts money on something that does you little good.

Waste of money
By S. McCarron
Having read both of Williams' books, I was eager to get my hands on this one. Two words for you: Don't bother. It's a complete waste of $70.00. The book contains only about 60 pages talking about the technical aspect of this strategy (most of which has been regurgitated) from his other two books), and the remainder of the book is dedicated to psychology, meditation and relaxation techniques. Now I know why. If you attempt this strategy, you're going to need them! The strategy consists of a countertrend technique, in which it attempts to pick the bottom to get long, or the top to get short via proper 'angulation' away from the alligator using a 'bullish/bearish divertion' bar. There are a couple of problems with this. 1.) Proper angulation is way too subjective and interpretive. 2.) There can be more than one divertion bar along the way that is hit to signal an entry, or no divertion bar at all. 3.) This setup rarely shows up; I've scanned about 500 daily charts. Sure, the book contains pictures of charts where there have been successful countrend trades, but old data makes anyone look smart. There is a big difference between old data and trading real-time. The author explains that if a countertrend trade hits your stop (set under the low/high of the divertion bar), and it has become a fractal, you simply go in the opposite direction. However, he doesn't explain how to exit, or if/how to pyramid into the position. Additionally, I found several contradictions in the book, notably the chart of TEVA on page 152. The 'short' trade is stopped out and reversed long on a Wise Man 3 signal which is a fractal in the opposite direction that is way below the teeth on the alligator when it's hit. A few pages earlier the author explains that if the first signal isn't a divertion bar, but a fractal, it should only be taken only if it's hit above the teeth!

Conslusion: Sure the book inlcudes some impressive pristine countertrend trades based on angulation and divertion bars in both directions, and exiting by either a SAR divertion bar in the opposite direction or a 3-5 bar trailing stop (discussed in book). Realisticaly, these trades just don't show up that often in the market (most stocks meander too close to the alligator to warrant proper entry according to this book), and a mechanical 3-5 bar trailing stop is going to get you out way to soon if you just so happened to guess correctly when entering. Simply put, the methodology is too interpretive - Like I said, anyone looks smart using old data. Also, there is no detailed explanation on how to exit a trade if stopped and reversed after a countertrend trade doesn't move in the expected direction, and the book doesn't offer any examples. Lastly, because there is no systematic way of testing this system because it's based on subjective interpretation, you can expect countless whipsaws and endless frustration if you decide to trade it without any predetermined probability of success. But what the hell, some of the relaxation methods discussed can help with that!
