"Big Daddy" drew me in

I bought this book because I had read Carries' amazing poem "Big Daddy" in an online zine. I wasn't disappointed. The poems are filled with southern nuances that hit home with this southern girl, reminding me of moments from my own life. Carrie covers so much territory from the soft moments in life to the quirky, how-the-hell-did-that-happen ones. I highly rec this book of poetry to those who prefer real-life experiences over frothy fantasy.

A woman of many walks of life, Carrie Jerrell brings a fine blend of them in "After the Revival". Telling stories through her verse, "After the Revival" is about a woman who isn't afraid to play dirty in life but keeps to her life's faith. "After the Revival " is a fresh and intriguing collection. "When the Rider is Hope": We pilot evening's cryptic air/fused as faith and plea in prayer./My burden's to become pure flight;/his, to right me if I scare.//When my blind spot blurs the fence,/he imparts his confidence:/his Easy girl, his loose-rein hands,/reprimand my reticence.//Heel to rib, approach then thrust,/I'm suspended by his trust,/playing earth's brief renegade/in bascules made of breath and dust.

Americana

Great craft. If that sounds a downer, part I's feisty, part II(the 'Wedding Suite')'s fantastic (great epigraph from George Herbert!), Part III's a little too rawhide for me - I know I recently praised Horse and Rider, but hey, horses for courses. Very 'rooted' and solid in a way the last Waywiser I reviewed, Dora Malech, so isn't; that was more poetic Esperanto - which also has its place, I guess. Jerrell's gritty, direct, sparky, sincere - and funny; Malech also does horses(p63) but are they real or - publish it not in the streets of Askelon - simply froth? Efferent bullet holes I liked, and bascules of dust - and Dottie 'Tease it up to Jesus' West was new to me; but Pekingese or Pekinese, please, NOT Pekingnese! And is that really how Philip Larkin spelt his name, Alan?
