Wifey 101, by Jamie N. Otis, Dibs Baer

When Jamie Otis agreed to be placed in a scientifically arranged marriage on TV's most controversial and groundbreaking reality show, Married At First Sight, she knew that saying "I do" to Doug Hehner, a complete stranger, was a huge risk. What she didn't know was how to be a wife! Through trial and error -- and more ups and downs than a roller coaster -- Jamie learned to quickly negotiate all of those universal problems all newlywed couples face, from leaving the toilet seat up to winning over the in-laws. All the while, her traumatic past and unresolved issues with an ex-boyfriend threatened to derail the healthiest relationship she'd ever been in. In her shocking, unflinching and hilarious memoir, Wifey 101: Everything I Got Wrong After Finding Mr. Right, Jamie fumbles her way through the newlywed game and lives to tell the tale.

About the Author
Jamie Otis was just 19 years old and a freshman in college when she begins raising her three younger siblings. She grew up with an absent father, an abusive step father and a mom who killed the pain with drugs. Before Jamie was able to legally drink a glass of wine, she is granted custody of her little sisters; Amylynn first then Leah. Balancing a part-time waitressing job, full-time nursing school on top of being the legal guardian of her siblings left no time for Jamie to deal with issues of trust, abandonment and neglect. However, Jamie healed while helping others. She became a certified foster parent and began caring for children who were in similar circumstances. Known best for her awkward attempts at finding love, Jamie appeared on season 16 of The Bachelor and season 3 of The Bachelor Pad. Soon after, she allows four professionals to find her ‘perfect’ match. She says ‘I do’ to a perfect stranger on Married At First Sight. Almost instantaneously the baggage from Jamie’s past came out full force as she began navigating life as a new wife. Fast forward through many ups and downs to two years later: Jamie Otis is still happily married to her ‘stranger’ husband, Douglas Hehner. Jamie Otis is a registered nurse, TV host (Married At First Sight: Unfiltered), jewelry designer (Jamie Otis Jewelry) and author (Wifey 101: Everything I Got Wrong After Finding Mr. Right). She’s appeared on Dr. Drew, Dr. Oz, The View, Good Morning America, Kathy Lee and Hoda, and Entertainment Tonight.

Great lessons to apply to your own marriage
By Twinkie3131
This book was shocking, gritty, real. I always felt there was something more to Jamie, and I'm glad I got to learn more about her (it proves you can't judge anyone; there's always more than meets the eye)! She is undeniably a strong person and admirable considering what she's gone through and how she's triumphed. But if course she had her flaws she had to confront if she wanted her marriage to work. It's almost painful to read about what she and Doug went through, but Jamie shows her metamorphosis to selflessness to make a marriage work with the grit and tenacity that she has practiced throughout her life. This is proof marriage is about two imperfect people and requires hard work, but the rewards are SO worth it!

This book also reminded me of "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers--about a woman who has a tough past but is pursued relentlessly by a man whom God commands to love her unconditionally, eventually healing her (even as hard as it is at first). I have a feeling Jamie would LOVE this book!

Thankfully I learned some good lessons to take with me; it was eye opening to hear the pillars of their relationship and realize I was not applying many of them. I even felt discomfort as I saw I was going down the same destructive path of not working at my own relationship. There's always room to improve, no matter who you are.

In light of their story, I have to say Jamie and Doug are awesome--stay together forever! I can't wait to see how your love blossoms as you continue to work hard for each other, because the other person is worth it!

(The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because there were some editing problems in some parts that made it hard to read!)

Being an author is simply not for everyone
By Amazon Customer
I really like Jamie and Doug. I think this book would have benefited from having an experienced editor or co-author as a major contributor to prevent the errors that were a distraction throughout. Beyond basic grammatical issues, the lack of cohesion caused a disservice to a woman who clearly has an impactful story to tell. Many portions seemed contradictory but I believe, if presented better, we would have seen that she simply isn't certain how to reconcile some of her thoughts, feelings, and traumas. Having experienced some similar traumas, I felt I understood why a woman can feel two completely different ways about something, at exactly the same time. Now trying to relay that to an audience of readers requires a great deal of professional help. For example, the abortions. It is not nearly out of the rhelm of possibilities to be both against and in favor of a personal decision that, let's face it, rocks our world in a way no one could fathom. One reviewer stated some unkind words on the topic but I think you can hear Jamie's heart, if you pay attention enough. Words like karma and guilt are used one moment and in another she's validating herself for it. That's simply how trauma plays out in real life. I just wish she had a supportive team who could have helped her organize and portray her story better. Even seasoned authors struggle with writing their own stories. Emotions simply cloud our editing abilities.
One other note that I didn't care for was her portrayal of Doug. I know he supports her and by now has read and chosen to stand by his wife. I do think he was criticized in ways that weren't needed. In one moment you're admiring her humility, but then she caps it off with something disparaging Doug. Authoring their hardships is one thing but it is a delicate balance between honesty and needles put downs. I felt badly for him and wished she respected his dignity more when expressing her obstacles with him. Putting another down simply does not raise your value. Jamie is already valuable and flawed like the rest of us. If Doug was a co-author and wanted to go that low with his self critique, then go for it. But it was mentioned more than once that he was not yet privvy to some information on the book which gave the appearance of him as a sitting duck. I don't believe that Doug is the saint and she's some flawed work in progress. I just think he should have been portrayed more fairly. In a book like this, express your flaws but be certain the readers are well aware that your partner is happy being portrayed that poorly.
Wifey 101 is a cute title but I don't think the advice portions were of any value. They took away from her story. She's just not in the advice-giving stage of life when it comes to marriage. Those seasoned in marriage are often limited on giving advice because we are always learning and all so different. It made Jamie appear vain which is contrary to pretty much everything else she's shared with the world. It is simply a confusing part of the book that a good team would have helped her weed out.
All in all, I'm honored she shared her story. Truly my dislikes center on the organization, grammar, and editing. Try again with a team who cares and takes the time to edit well, you have one knock out story.
I sincerely hope this review is helpful in propelling this story to reach it's powerful potential. I wish you both all the very best.

Love this book and its brave author!!
By Gina
I have been rooting for Jamie as soon as I saw her for the first time in an episode of Married at First Sight that aired in Italy some time ago. I didn't know anything about her, but I just felt she was a lovely person. She may have started her experience in the show in a rocky way (her reaction when she first saw her soon-to-be husband was definitely not the one you'd expect from a happy bride!) but I knew that couple would make it in the end.
Being already a huge fan of hers and Doug's, I couldn't wait to read this book. I pre-ordered it in April, and on June 7th it was sent straight to Italy, which is where I live. It took it a couple weeks to arrive, and when it finally did I took it on vacation with me and started reading on the train...well, I had to get off the train but I wouldn't want to put the book down! I read it in 2 days!
Jamie's life has not always been a fairytale (actually it was very far from it) but instead of growing up a bitter woman, angry with life and people, she' s become a lovely human being, who thought sharing her issues and mistakes could not only set her free from her past but also help other people overcome similar struggles.
It's not easy to write down your dark memories, knowing that thousands of people will know about them and could judge you for them..but she was brave enough to do it, to prove that your past doesn't define you. It's how you decide to overcome your past struggles that makes you the person you really are. And she decided to help others, by being a nurse first and now also by writing her story, so props to you Jamie for your courage!
You're the living proof that sometimes life gets really hard, but If you believe it, it will pay you back with something amazing (yes, I'm talking about your amazing hubs and the little family you are creating!)

So, if you have loved Jamie on her TV experiences, I really recommend you read this book, 'cause it'll make you love her even more.
If you haven't really liked her on TV, you should buy it as well, 'cause you'll understand so many of her reactions and behaviours knowing her background.
And if you don't know her from her TV experiences, you should still buy it: it'll give you the chance to get to know an amazing person, you won't regret it!
