About the Author

Trent C. Butler is a freelance author and editor. He served ten years on the faculty of the International Baptist Theological Seminary in R�schilkon, Switzerland, and for twenty-two years as editor and editorial director for Holman Bible Publishers and LifeWay. He wrote the Word Biblical Commentary volume on Joshua, the Layman’s Bible Book Commentary on Isaiah, the Holman Old Testament Commentaries on Isaiah and Hosea through Micah, and the Holman New Testament Commentary on Luke. He served on the editorial Board of the Holman Christian Standard Bible, and edited the Holman Bible Dictionary. Dr. Butler has a Ph.D. in biblical studies and linguistics from Vanderbilt University, has done further study at Heidelberg and Zurich, and has participated in the excavation of Beersheba.�

Bruce M. Metzger (1914 – 2007) was a biblical scholar, textual critic, and a longtime professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. Metzger is widely considered one of the most influential New Testament scholars of the 20th century.�He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2007).

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984).�

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah.�He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

James W. Watts�is a professor and chair of the Department of Religion at Syracuse University. Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Lynn Allan Losie is�Associate Professor of New Testament at Azusa Pacific University.�A generalist in New Testament studies, Dr. Losie teaches courses in the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Pauline Epistles, as well as in the background areas of Greek, early Judaism, and the greater Hellenistic World. He has published articles on the New Testament and had served as the associate New Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2013). Ordained as a Baptist minister, he has also served in pastoral ministry in Southern California and Oregon.

I have not been disappointed by any one of the books in this resource set. They are a great tool for preparing sermons or doing research for school or if you just want more insight into scriptures and the world around them. I have found that this series offers a depth that I have found sorely missing in a lot of the more contemporary works. I do not think you can go wrong with this series.

Was extremely informative and very well written. A lot of the material is stuff that I had heard of or read separately and it is great to have such an organized and chronological source to site when referring to CIA entanglements in South America. Overall I loved the book and it was very easy to read and understand! Great job!

Ive been interested in the CIA's hand around the world for quite a while, having seen the book and just skimming over the contents, i was immediately interested... The book covers not only the CIA in Jamaica, but also connects the dots to other goings on during the time period... Extremely informative and very well written, the author obviously has a passion for the subject and bringing truth to the reader. I enjoyed the read immensely and would highly recommend it to anyone with even a slight interest in geo-politics/history/CIA and the history of the US gov.'s actions around the world. Great job!

Comprehensive overview of a lot of the Cold War activity to which Jamaica and several other countries suffered collateral damage. I was vaguely aware of the mix of violence and politics in Jamaica over the years, but Casey's detail was illuminating. Enjoyed it.

Great Read, more informative than instructive. Not ideal for reading on a smaller Kindle screen.

Although Kool G. Rap is featured on the cover the book is mainly composed of excerpts from interviews of various rappers and observations from the other author (Paul Edwards) tying them together thematically. The order of topics and choice of quotes is not perfect, many quotes are repeated and often some concepts seem to have quotes thrown in simply to avoid having no 'sources' even though the quotes are not very interesting out of context. Many of the ideas covered could be considered basic or obvious to anyone except a person who just recently began listening to Hip Hop.
The historical context of the Hip Hop movement and reference to many classic 'required listening' albums and artists are great, and the lists of various attributes of an MC are useful, if only to have a vocabulary to discuss things you have already noticed. The flow diagram method is interesting and reflects what many lyrically talented rappers like Rakim already do when writing. Unfortunately these diagrams are not easily resized for reading on a kindle or other small tablet so it can be a little bit difficult to follow some of the longer technical breakdowns if you are reading the electronic version. The book describes many techniques but is hesitant to give many rules or guidelines, especially because of conflicting advice from various interviews. Ultimately I would almost prefer to read or listen to the interviews themselves, especially because many of the rappers interviewed clearly express themselves through sound, intonation, and gestures which are lost in the quotations. There is also a lot of space devoted to the actual act of performing performing on stage and furthering your notoriety as an MC. This book might be better titled 'How MCs are made'

Bottom line - If you are new to the genre, don't know where to start, or would like a fun read with a lot of great context for modern Hip Hop this is a great buy. It's definitely worth the money but beyond the flow diagrams most of the advice could be boiled down to ' Practice constantly, be creative with your process, and listen to a lot of Hip Hop if you ever want to be an MC.

Should Be Taught In Schools to Educate wack rappers

This book is a very fascinating read for leisure for non-rappers. For people like myself who is an avid listener of rap music, this book broke down the many aspects of emceeing; vocal tone, delivery, breath control, flow, content, collaborations with other rappers and producers, etc. There are many current rappers on the scene that could use this book as a gift but would probably catch feelings and say you'r a hater (Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Waka Flacka Flame). This book is very well organized and edited. The content inside the book is far from dense, which makes it an easier read. This book can be understood by laymen and musicians.

Many of my favorite musicians were interviewed to get their advice and insight into the art and science of being an emcee-Royce Da 5'9", ATCQ, Shock G, E-40, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Crooked I, Joell Ortiz to name a few. I cannot praise this book enough. Often I will listen to music and reference a certain topic and analyze how well a particular emcee demonstrated the lesson. When it comes to breath control for example my fave emcees who do it the best are (Treach from Naughty By Nature, KRS-1, Eminem), showmanship (Em, KRS-1, The Roots). If you love Hip-Hop and celebrate rap for its linguistic acrobatics, rhythm and poetry then get this book. As Rakim said on "Follow The Leader" 'rap is rhythm and poetry/cuts create sound effects"

A Beginner's Guide with History...

This book breaks down the science of rapping not by talking like a know-it-all, but speaking to different artists that have different presentation styles and work ethics. It explains that rap is more than just putting words together, but an artform. If you ever thought that Hip-Hop is nothing more than putting words that sounds great together, read this book. You'll come out of it with a better understanding of Hip-Hop/Rap a lot more.

I recommend this book to anyone that wants to start rapping or current artist that needs inspiration. This book covers so much of the basis, that I re-read it for inspiration and ideas for structuring new songs.

Erik's backstory...

Answering many origin questions about Erik & Gil, this book is still pretty fast paced witty plenty of action and magic. No real cussing, extreme gore, or sex, although it does delve a bit into God and gods. Very enjoyable read and a good sequel, although it does feel a bit like it is a backstory converted into a book.

I love magic and fights and adventure. This book has all that and more. Looking forward to the third book. I'm anticipating more of the same. Battling the Sins is going to be another thrill ride. I highly recommend this book.

Lots of action but very oddly slow to me

I really hovered between 3 and 4 stars for this one. This book is basically a looooooooooooong conversation with a wise old gentleman of some paranormal flavor in which we get Erik's backstory, so often alluded to in the first book. It was like an infodump and cheesy action movie rolled into one. Unfortunately the story was very slow. Fight scenes drug on and on and on. It was like watching Erik vs the Terminator with the way the bad guys just seemed to die and then crawled out from under the rubble, made smartass remarks, and started trying to kill him again. I felt like the whole book could have been told in a quarter of the time. Erik and Gil are teenagers during all of this so we don't get any of the adult years of badass assignments and creative fighting. At this point in Erik's life it's just about raw energy and hacking at things. We do learn many important things like how Erik's cat/demon came into his life, why he and Gil are estranged, why he and Gil had to kill his father, and more about his mother. We find out all about how he was trained--both by an evil (Faust) and good (Tenzin) teacher. The only forward momentum in story is how Abi's training is coming, hints that she's crazy powerful, and her earning a powerful weapon of her own. This is about a chapter's worth of the book. I look forward to the next book and hope that it's a return to the dynamic, clever action and the great character interactions of the first book.

Great book, but be aware on online quiz code.

The book itself is very good. However, BE AWARE that each book contains a unique code in the front cover for taking the online quizzes that are required for this class (at Liberty University). Once the code has been used, it cannot be re-used. So if you are taking this class for credit, you must purchase a BRAND NEW book. You cannot purchase an online quiz code separately (I tried!). Thus, the re-sale value of this book is zero, unless you happen to find someone who wants the book to study without actually taking the class for college credit. My daughter ran into this problem, unknowingly purchasing a used book on Amazon, then having to purchase a second brand-new book to take the quizzes. THEN, my son took the class the very next semester, and could not use his sister's book, but had to buy another brand-new copy. (Someone please plant a tree to replace all this paper!) But... they both said that the book and class are very good.

Filled with helpful study habits for the Adult online student

Even though this book is for Liberty University Online Students, don't pass this up. It is filled with fantastic study and collegiate writing tips that any student attending any college can use. If you are an adult, and a little intimidated about going back to school, this book WILL help ease your anxiety. It goes into everything, such as figuring out what type of learner you are (e.g. audible, visual, ect.), then suggesting study strategies that take advantage of your particular learning style. In addition, if you have absolutely no experience in writing a college level research paper, don't worry, it will walk you through the entire process from writing a thesis, brainstorming, research, outlining, drafting, through to final submission. You will see that it is not quite that hard after all. I am 36 years old and was already an online student with another institution, before transferring to Liberty University as a Sophomore; even though I already had experience I still learned a great deal from this book. You will not be disappointed.

Had a lot of useful information in it for someone starting college online

Bought this book used. This is a book used for Liberty University. You will need a access code that normally comes with the new book. I was able to call the company and they gave me another access code to use with the book. Book was a little rough shape when I got it but that did not matter to me as I don't care how it looks as long as I can read the pages. Had a lot of useful information in it for someone starting college online. This goes though some of the history of Liberty University too. Great Christian University!
