About the Author
D. Peter Snustad is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Davis. He began his faculty career in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at Minnesota in 1965, became a charter member of the new Department of Genetics in 1966, and moved to the Department of Plant Biology in 2000. During his 43 years at Minnesota, he taught courses ranging from general biology to biochemical genetics. His initial research focused on the interactions between bacteriophage T4 and its host, E. coli. In the 1980s, his research switched to the cytoskeleton of Arabidopsis and the glutamine synthetase genes of corn. His honors include the Morse-Amoco and Dagley Memorial teaching awards and election to Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A lifelong love of the Canadian wilderness has kept him in nearby Minnesota.

Michael J. Simmons is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his B.A. degree in biology from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in genetics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Simmons has taught a variety of courses, including genetics and population genetics. He has also mentored many students on research projects in his laboratory. Early in his career he received the Morse-Amoco teaching award from the University of Minnesota in recognition of his contributions to undergraduate education. Dr. Simmons’s research focuses on the genetic significance of transposable elements in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster. He has served on advisory committees at the National Institutes of Health and was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Genetics for 21 years. One of his favorite activities, figure skating, is especially compatible with the Minnesota climate.

Kindle version of "principles of genetics"

The kindle version of this book is very easy to navigate, looks great and is much easier to carry around then the physical book. The book also opens up quickly and had little load time when navigating the book. My only complaint is there was a couple times that a portion of the book was absent or "cut out". This was not a weird loading error because the page would always show up with the portion missing. Also, I don't think you can open this book through the kindle app on another computer.

An Outstanding TextBook In Genetics

This is one of the best textbooks that I have seen. First it seems exceptionally complete and does not shy away from being challenging at times. The explanations are clear and precise. It is well illustrated. It's coverage of genetics from basic concepts to advanced concepts is ideal for serious classes in Biology majors who expect to go further. The book also introduces the student to a resource that immensely useful in research: The National Center for Biotechnology Information database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). The book has inspired me to research the subject further.

Very Disappointed

Very disappointed with features. I have to read this book for a class and I have dyslexia and can't comprehend things when I read, so I rented this book off of amazon so I can use my computer to read this book to me so I can do the best I can because this book is new and I can't get it on audiobook. I was able to get through chapters one and two, then half way through chapter three I was unable to have my computer to read to me anymore which I find outrageous because I spent the money for that specific purpose. I am very disappointed with this and will not likely rent another text book in the future.

Incredibly Relevant!

This book could not have been released at a better time. It is incredibly relevant to the current state of affairs throughout the American culture. At a time when many are feeling helpless against economical issues, professional obstacles and the ongoing strains on family/relationships, this book gives light to some simplified avenues by which to reclaim ownership and power in all areas of our lives. An easy read with an excellent manner of storytelling meets truth and application!

Beth Bailey is professor of American studies and Regents Lecturer at the University of New Mexico. Her books include Sex in the Heartland and From Front Porch to Backseat. David Farber is professor of history at the University of New Mexico. His books include The Age of Great Dreams: America in the 1960s and The Sixties: From Memory to History. Saw excerpt on Delancey Place morning e-mail and was intrigued

I subscribe to the 5 x a week Delancey Place email book excerpts because it expands my horizons as to what kinds of books I might like to read. In this case, I became an adult during the 70's and it was enlightening to me to read about the social changes that were taking place (at a macro level) and comparing them to my own experiences (at a micro level), like finding my first professional job as a woman in the marketplace, hearing about computers that you could actually have in your home (instead of creating stacks and stacks of punch cards to be feed into the enormous card readers at the all night campus computer center), The essays are well-written and foot noted, so if you want to burrow on back to the primary sources, you can,

Interesting Overview Of The Decade

The lighthearted cover of this one, with photos of Archie and Edith Bunker, Farrah Fawcett and John Travolta's disco stance, is a bit misleading. This is not a light read, geared toward the fad culture of the seventies. Instead, this is a studied look at the politics, social movements and major influences of the decade.

I found some of the writing in these essays dry, even for nonfiction. Others, like 'She "can bring home the bacon"', which covered the women's liberation movement and "Adults Only", which talked about the so-called sexual revolution, fascinated me.

Whether you grew up during the seventies, as I did, were an older adult or a glimmer in your parents' eyes, this book offers a perspective of the much overlooked decade that can only be seen in hindsight.

Were The Seventies a Truly Great Decade?

Around the early 1990's, there began a nostalgic mania for everything 70's. Bell-bottoms, seen as a joke in the 1980's, were back in style. Disco, once the butt of jokes, was popular again. Perhaps the movie "Dazed and Confused" inspired it? But since nobody born after 1975 could remember the 70's, could young people really understand the issues of the time?

This book about 1970's America offers fresh and disturbing angles on the decade. One of the examples is the movie "Looking for Mister Goodbar" with Diane Keaton. The author uses this to show a side of the "Sexual Revolution" that college professors and horny college guys speak of frequently. Discussions of the 1970's attitude towards "free sex" is usually positive; it was a decade where consenting adults had the new freedom to explore sexuality. But the author has a darker view. Women could easily put themselves in a dangerous situations, in a decade before AIDS made us wary. He also wonders if the sense of rebellion among American women led them to make poor judgments with men, as does the character in the movie. The protagonist has a respectable job, and by night she seeks dangerous relationships. Is she rebelling against her "good girl" persona? Did rebellion lead naive girls into dangerous lifestyles? Is this a topic we can discuss without looking like male chauvinists?

Some look back fondly at the "good old days." Others say there were never any "good old days." 1970's New York was a crime-ridden hellhole, which is why my parents moved to Queens in 1980. But people still look at the 70's as a decade of color, fashion, music, and culture. Sometimes we even feel nostalgic for the grimy, dirty, New York City streets from "Taxi Driver" and "Deathwish," although at the same time you can't disappreciate the reduction in crime in the last 20 years. Today, you see retro-80's clothing in the stores, but for me it brings back no fond memories. Someone born after 1985 won't remember the AIDS scare, Iran, the Cold War, the Crack epidemic, and the things that me feel NO nostalgia for the era.

Perhaps nostalgia sometimes blinds us to reality.

About the Author
A motorcycle enthusiast since his early teens, Rod has always been fascinated by Velocette, collecting the catalogues, reading the road test and pedal cycling all over the country to see them!� Other makes were purchased first but a 1963 Clubman was eventually acquired, starting off a long period of ownership and yet more research enriched from the many Velo friendships borne along the way.� The author of a previous Velocette book, Rod has also written several articles published in well known Classic magazines.�

Mr. Burris has got it covered (it's Rod, by the way)

If you are a Velo fan, you've probably read "Technical Excellence Exemplified" by Ivan Rhodes, and "Velocette: Saga of a Great Motorcycle" by "Titch" Allen. While these are both excellent, "Velocette Motorcycles - MSS to Thruxtion" by Rod Burris, devotes pretty much the whole book to the M series bikes, with a little Velo history thrown in as well. Since these models really make up the majority of Velos that are ridden and restored today, it is a very useful and interesting book. A great deal of time is spent on the "why" of a particular development, rather than just cold facts and figures. I buy quite a few motorcycle books and magazines, and the ones I enjoy the most are the ones with pictures that are unique to that book, and this one is loaded with them. I get tired of looking at grainy recycled photos from old motorcycle magazines that I have seen before. This book also has a nice color section in it, not only with Velo owners and their mounts, but reprints of many old Velocette brochures, something rarely seen. In addition, it covers technical upgrading of the M series machines, something that very few "restoration" books ever get into. Whether you are looking at becoming a Velo owner, and want to explore the world of Velos before you dive in, or a long time owner wanting to know "why they used that part during that particular year", I would highly recommend this book.

Good read

Having owned British bikes for almost 40 years I figured a Velocette would be mostly like the rest...Wrong. Yes they are very British but the engineering is very different from the rest. This book is teaching me the ins and outs of these rolling works of art.
