Witness for the Prosecution

Agatha Christie wrote these nine stories in the 1930s and 1940s. They are entertaining as long as you don’t question their assumptions. They show the culture from over seventy years ago. I found the best story was “Philomel Cottage”. They are mostly about murders. Does this meet the reader’s concerns?

“Witness for the Prosecution” tells about the murder of an elderly lady who befriended a young man and named him as the sole heir to her fortune. Does he have an alibi for the time of murder? Can this witness be impeached? [This assumes no background investigation of those letters and witness.]
“The Red Signal” is about the validity of a premonition. Uncle Arlington warns his nephew against his love interest. Can he be framed for a murder? Does this involve insanity? Can you trust your instincts?
“The Fourth Man” tells about four men in a train carriage who discuss a woman with multiple personalities. She has a friend who went into show business and died young. Was this story believable? The fourth man comments.

“S.O.S.” is about a family living in an isolated house; its raining. A traveler arrives seeking shelter, and is given a bedroom for the night. Who wrote letters in the dust? Will one of the daughters inherit a large fortune? Is the other girl in danger?
“Where There’s a Will” starts when Mrs. Harter is warned against worry and excitement. Her nephew suggests a radio set. One day she hears a strange voice from the radio! Is it a message from the spirit world? Who will inherit her fortune?
“The Mystery of the Blue Jar” tells how a young man hears a cry for help. A young woman nearby did not hear it. It repeats. What is it? There is a meeting with this blue jar in a cottage. Will this turn out to be a scam to steal valuable property?

“Philomel Cottage” is the home of Mrs. Alix Martin and her new husband. Gerald (a perfect stranger). Alix put up the money to buy this house. She hears disturbing news from the old man that tends the flower beds. Then old newspaper clippings told of an accused murderer. What will happen that night?
“Accident” starts with the retirement of Inspector Evans of the CID. A neighbor was acquitted of poisoning her husband. Mr. Merrowdene took out life insurance recently. Evans joins them for tea. Will he make a misstep? [Believable?]
“The Second Gong” tells how people are summoned for dinner. They hear a noise like a shot. The master of the house did not show up. He is found dead in a locked room, a small pistol in his hand! Hercule Poirot was called to investigate a swindle. Poirot questions the other guests. Then he offers a solution. Was it the obvious suspect?

About the Author
Alfred Edward Wooley Mason was born in 1865. He was educated at Dulwich College before going up to Oxford University. Once his formal education was completed, Mason went on to become an actor, which had been an ambition since schooldays. He began his writing career with historical fiction, but then moved into the arena of politics, becoming a Liberal Member of Parliament for Coventry in 1906. However, his love of writing stayed with him and Mason further developed his repertoire and style to incorporate detective fiction, introducing one of the earliest fictional detectives, Inspector Hanaud, the Gallic counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. His detective fiction contains material clues and spontaneity. Throughout the course of his life Mason produced over thirty titles. The most enduring work is ‘The Four Feathers’ which is the most filmed work of any writer in the 20th century, with seven versions in all. There have also been many other films and plays based on his novels, including the Hanaud series. A.E.W. Mason died in 1948.

faulty text

There aren't many mountaineering novels, but this is one of them. Like Mason's Four Feathers, it's a romantic adventure story, the final scene set on the great Brenva face of Mont Blanc, though much of the story takes place in England.

A word of warning about this edition; If you look on p. 3, you will see the phrase "humaning her with a smile." The original, of course, reads "humanizing her with a smile." The misprint of "humaning" is also found in the Project Gutenberg version, and I imagine this text has been taken from Gutenberg (which also has some other mistakes in it). So why not simply download the Gutenberg text, which is free, and put up with the misprints? or, if you want a better version, go search one of the used booksellers on the web, and get a used copy of the real thing?

Novel of an early female Alpine climber

Set in the Alpine climbing community in the latter part of the 19th century, this novel sets up suspense, romance, and adventure for Sylvia Thesiger, a young woman climber drawn to the Alps. She leaves her mother's overbearing yet heedless care to go live with the father she's never met. Meanwhile, she meets climber Hilary Chayne, and together they uncover a plot which endangers a young man with links to both.

The book was written in a very old fashioned manner. good for seeing what victorians were really like. Many red herrings that just vanished. There was no explanation of why the leading bad guy changed his identity, and how he intended to kill his victim on the Old Brenva Route on Mt. Blanc.
The heroine was too prim and proper. how can one read a novel without the slightest hint of spicy nights.
Chamonix is not in Switzerland!

Huntington Willard is President and Director of the Marine Biological Laboratory and Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Chicago. Prior to his appointment at the MBL, Willard was on the faculty at Duke University, where he was founding director of the university-wide Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy from 2003 to 2014, the Nanaline H. Duke Professor of Genome Sciences, and the Arts & Sciences Professor of Biology & Genome Sciences.

Comprehensive

This is a quite comprehensive and general overview of medical genetics, with perhaps more focus on scientific research than clinical practice, although both are well represented.

However, this is a rapidly changing field of research, and some of the newest techniques (such as whole genome association studies) and most informative websites (such as SNPedia) that are insufficiently addressed in this edition will presumably get caught only in the (hopefully frequent) future editions.

A Great Study Guide for the ABMG Exam!!!

This is a great study guide for the American Board of Medical Genetics exam. It covers cytogenetics and molecular genetics in depth, and also discusses other important concepts such as Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Population Genetics, Genomics, and single gene and complex inheritance.
I have not used the on-line access feature yet, but I have noticed a lot of improvements from the previous printed edition, including reorganized chapters, new/updated end-of-chapter questions, new statistics based on a more updated human gene count/information, and new sections on array comparative genomic hybridization. Overall, it would be essential to own this book if you're studying for the ABMG board exam, although I would also recommend supplementing your studies with other resouces to be more comprehensively prepared.

More like genetics of disease then clinical medicine

This is one of those comprehensive texts that can be difficult to wade through at times, but at least the writing is decent even if there is a glut of information. The focus is on the genetic mechanisms of disease and technologies used to detect and augment genetic information. For me, the book serves as a good review and extension of first-year biology, as well as an introduction to where DNA technology came, where it is, and where it might be going.

Great depiction of a legendary character.

As a long time fan of the X-Men as a whole and Magneto in particular, I enjoyed this tremendously. I ordered this at the same time as "Magneto: Testament," which was finally reprinted, and the two pair together extremely well.

Bunn gets Magneto's voice perfectly in this volume, as we see him roaming the country, eliminating threats to mutantkind. There are a couple of instances where we think we're about to see a softer side of Magneto, only to have him revert to his true form time and time again, which is essentially what this story is, coming on the heels of Magneto partnering with Cyclops for the past few years, but now going out on his own again.

The second arc deals with Magneto seeking vengeance for perhaps the most infamous mutant-on-mutant crime, the Mutant Massacre (a classic and incredible story from the 1980s that included the first published encounter between Sabretooth and Wolverine). It's worth picking up that collection if you want to know more about the Marauders, who are the victims of Magneto's wrath here. The final page of this collection left me wondering what direction this will head next, and I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for the next volume.

Great character. Great art. Great story

This is a terrific series. Whether you're with him or against him, Magneto is a very interesting and compelling character, and this is a very good set-up for him. He's a complex character, because he's an extremist with genuinely understandable motivations. He's at his best when he's straddling the line between hero and villain, and that's exactly what's going on here. When he's written correctly, Magneto is one of the best characters in comics, and Cullen Bunn has found a very nice balance.

Lately, Magneto has been spending time as a member of the X-Men, but this story takes him away from them to pursue his mission as the savior of mutantkind. It's not an original comparison (in fact, it was one of the reasons I decided to pick this up), but this is basically the comic book equivalent of the Magneto-as-Nazi-hunter scenes from X-Men: First Class. He's taken it upon himself to save the mutant race by any means necessary. There's also some nice tension as Magneto is forced to reconcile his self-image as the Master of Magnetism with the fact that his powers have mysteriously been reduced to a flicker of their former glory.

The art is fantastic. Gabriel Hernandez-Walta has a pretty distinctive style with fine lines and beautiful ink washes. There's a very nice structure to his work, and it fits the tone perfectly. His work took a little getting used to when I first saw it (in a different series), but I'm a big fan. The other artist, Javi Fernandez, is also quite good. His art is much more traditional, but the two styles shouldn't clash enough for it to be distracting. It seems like it would be an unenviable task to find an artist to alternate duties with Hernandez-Walta, but they found a very good one.

All-in-all, a pretty awesome package. Strong story, great art, a compelling protagonist. This is one of the best books coming out of Marvel right now. If you're even faintly interested in reading a Magneto comic, you should pick it up.

Ok wow so this is what magneto is like.ive really never knew to much about magneto going in to this just that he used to be a bad guy that fought for mutant rights then he became good,so I wasn't to sure about reading this but I Must say wow magneto is a bad ass stone cold killer!! This series has a darker tone to it.ad it's nice that it's just focused on one mutant rather then all kinds of x men it makes me get more into the story.i say give it a tray if your wondering of you should read it or not.
