About the Author
Robert Conroy is the author a run of hugely popular alternate history novels, including Himmler’s War and Rising Sun for Baen Books. His 1942, which is set within a Japanese conquest of Hawaii, won the prestigious Sidewise Award for alternate histories. Conroy has written for Military History magazine and has traveled extensively in Europe where he’s taken a special interest in battlefields, historical collections, and castles. After a first career in business, Conroy has turned his lifelong passion for writing and military history into an immensely satisfying new occupation. He is married, lives in southeastern Michigan, and, when not writing, teaches business and economic history at a local college.

Not up to his best, or even his average.

Mr Conroy fails this time. Compared to his best efforts, (1861 for instance) this moves along at a snails pace, an unhealthy snail at that, with that "suspension of disbelief" that alternate history books really demand. Custer is lucky enough to survive the Little Bighorn, through no efforts of his own, becomes famous and wins the presidency..... equally unlikely. Then as president he makes decisions that even a drunken ward heeler would avoid and becomes, well, a man in chains.

I like Conroy, a lot, but sometimes he hits the nail rather off the head, and this is perhaps his poorest blow of the hammer.

Not Conroy's best

This is an alternate history novel that postulates that General George Armstrong Custer survived the Little Big Horn battle and went to to successfully become the President of the United States in the late 1800s. Custer decides that the only way for him to be a "great" president is to be a war president, and accordingly he more or less provokes a war with Spain, centered in Cuba.

This novel is not one of Conroy's best. The theme is not very imaginative, and the storyline bogs down in fairly minor struggles of non-entities on the American and Spanish side. The best alternative history novels usually focus on the actions of historical figures acting in an alternative history context. There is some of that here (I will avoid serious spoilers) such as Civil War general Hancock returning to duty, Vice President (in this alternative history) Chester A. Arthur, and a few others. But not much. In my opinion the lack of a larger context by actual historical figures is this novel's failing. Instead, the novel focuses on a few imaginary protagonists in a murky and meandering way that caused me to more or less hurry through the reading of the last third or so of the novel.

Conroy has written some really excellent alternative history novels. This is not one of them. RJB.

The premise that if Custer lived he would have become ...

The premise that if Custer lived he would have become president is interesting. The characterization of the historical characters seems to be reasonable based on the actual men and women assuming they had been placed in the situations described in this alternative history. Otherwise the book is essentially a projection of what might have happened if the Spanish-American war had started 10 years early. Where the author really excels is in his fictional characters, He creates well developed people to develop the situations and story in the alternative time-line.

These writings, translations from either Old French or Latin, offer a fresh view of a man who tried to combine understanding and affectivity in a lifelong search for the presence of God. General readers with an interest in history, as well as historians, theologians, and medievalists, will appreciate this major contribution to medieval history and to the intellectual history of Europe in general.

Revealing the human side of the latter Scholastic period

As the introduction included in this volume is clear to point out, Gerson is not a seminal and towering influence over subsequent intellectual developments. Gerson is, however, notable for the reader interested in the decline of the medieval scholastic tradition, for with Gerson's writtings one finds a marked departure from the disputations which dominated thirteenth and fourteenth century theology. Rather there is a move towards writting to increasingly wider audiences in increasingly plain language, anticipating modernity's tendency to emphasize more exoteric writing.

But what is most engaging, and what should garner interest in this volume, is Gerson's honest portrayal of his own inner life. Seen by a modern reader to be at times fair and loving, at times harsh and needlessly austere, and always willing to present his own weaknesses, failures, and needs, Gerson reveals the humanity of his own era in a way which allows us to recognize our own.

This volume became indispensable for all those interested in Gerson and he is worth to be interested in! Brian McGuire did an exceptional job. Highly recommended for specialists but also for all those interested in medieval spirituality.

Lucia Jordan's wonderlust.... a great read

Lucia Jordan's wonderlust like many of her other books I've read is fast paced and totally erotic without being vulgar. I for one would have loved if the daughter, Em was more obvious somehow in the book. . A pretty good few minutes of escape from my reality.
